Gaiters’ win­ning streak halted by first-place Martlets

Bas­ket­ball: A dou­ble-dou­ble by An­neth Him-lazarenko led the Mcgill Martlets over the Bishop’s Gaiters, 63-55, in Que­bec univer­sity women’s bas­ket­ball league play at the Mitchell Gym, last Fri­day night. The fourth-year guard scored 18 points and grabbed 12 re­bounds, both game highs, for the Martlets, who now lead the Que­bec con­fer­ence by 1 ½ games.

Bishop’s (10-13, 10-12 CIS, 5-5 Que­bec) was led by Eloisa Katz (Ra’anana, Is­rael), who scored 14 points. Jessy Roy (Val d’or, Que.) scored eight points, as did sopho­more cen­tre Danna Jan­vier (Laval, Que.). Véronique Fortin-trem­blay had a ca­reer-high four blocked shots, and she led the Gaiters with six re­bounds.

The Gaiters held Françoise Charest, the Martlets’ lead­ing scorer, to only two points, but she did post game highs with five as­sists and four steals.

The Gaiters re­turn to ac­tion on Fri­day, Fe­bru­ary 10, as they visit the Con­cor­dia Stingers. Their next home game is on Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 11, against the UQAM Ci­tadins.

Men’s Bas­ket­ball: The Mcgill Redmen used a bal­anced at­tack to de­feat the Bishop’s Gaiters, 61-44, in Que­bec univer­sity men’s bas­ket­ball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Fri­day night. Four play­ers scored in dou­ble fig­ures for the Redmen, who picked up their third straight win.

Bishop’s (6-17, 6-13, 1-9) was led by Jeremy Leonard-smith (Ot­tawa, Ont.), who came off the bench to score 16 points, while Mukiya Post (Vic­to­ria, B.C.) added 13. Sopho­more cen­tre Mike An­drews (Oakville, Ont.) led the Gaiters with eight re­bounds and three blocked shots.

The Redmen held a wide edge on the boards, out­re­bound­ing Bishop’s 48-38. Mcgill also out­shot the Gaiters, 39% to 32%.

The Gaiters re­turn to ac­tion on Fri­day, Fe­bru­ary 10, as they visit the Con­cor­dia Stingers. Their next home game is on Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 11, against the UQAM Ci­tadins.
