New service for caregivers
A new service will soon be available for natural caregivers in the Estrie region called Appui Estrie. This new organization will provide a telephone reference service for natural caregivers, directing them to available services, and develop new services aimed at improving the quality of life of the natural caregivers of seniors.
“It is good news for caregivers in the Estrie. A few more steps need to be taken before the whole thing is operational. Last November we hired Genevieve Coté as general director. We’ve moved into our offices, situated at 85 Belvedere North, in Sherbrooke. Moreover, we have mandated the
Centre d’expertise en santé de Sherbrooke to create a regional portrait of the services available to natural caregivers as well as conduct a survey of the needs of caregivers of seniors on our territory. Once we see this portrait, we can determine the priorities with regard to the development of services and, ultimately, to launch a call for projects. We want to go through this stage carefully because this portrait along with the identified priorities will guide us for the next three years,” commented the president of the Board of Directors, Marie-pierre Laurent.
Tens of thousands of natural caregivers to seniors (spouses, children, grandchildren, sisters or brothers, nieces or nephews, neighbours or friends) in the region provide daily and without pay help and support to seniors, allowing them to live at home as long as possible and maintain their quality of life. These caregivers can be ‘put to the test’, depending on how challenging it is to provide care and juggle personal responsibilities, family responsibilities as well as their responsibilities as caregivers. It often results in stress and exhaustion, leading to their own health problems. Much greater support for caregivers is needed from the community.for more information you may call Genevieve Coté at 819 791-7771.
