Bingo for Books – this Saturday
Ifyou enjoy a good game of bingo then why not come out to Sunnyside Elementary School this Saturday? The school’s parent’s committee has organized an afternoon of bingo to raise money to buy books for the school’s library. Although the makeover the library received a few years ago made the room more inviting with new shelves and a reading corner, not many books have been purchased in recent years and many there are wearing out. “We have a really nice library but by grade six the kids have read everything. We still have the ‘backpack’ initiative going on where the students can bring home for the weekend a backpack full of books on a related subject,” mentioned Kelly Belanger of the parent’s committee, adding: “It would be nice to be able to get rid of those tattered books.”
“We’ll open the doors at noon and the games will begin at 1:00 pm. We’ll play until 3:00 pm or later if we haven’t finished giving out all the prizes,” said Kelly. There is a $100 jackpot to be won as well as almost one hundred gift prizes. “We have things like men’s gloves, gift baskets, candles and lots more. We put everything on a gift table and then people can choose the gift that they want. We’ve received lots of donations from local merchants so there should be something for everyone.”
The bingo will be held in the school’s gymnasium where there is plenty of room. The gym is wheelchair accessible and there are wheelchair accessible washrooms nearby on the same floor. Volunteers will be selling homemade soup, sandwiches, beverages and snacks beginning at noon for those who like to play on a full stomach. “Children are welcome to come and play bingo too. It’s a family event,” said Kelly. Robert Sheldon has volunteered to call the bingo and the Catholic Church in Beebe has donated the use of their bingo cards and bingo machine. If you have your own bingo chips, bring them, or you’ll have to use beans! The bingo cards will cost $1 each.
