Gaiters bounced out of play­offs by vis­it­ing Laval

A22-point night from Éti­enne Labrecque led the Laval Rouge et Or to an 87-76 vic­tory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in CIS men’s bas­ket­ball ac­tion at the Mitchell Gym, last Fri­day night.

The game, played un­der a play­off at­mos­phere be­fore a sea­son-high crowd of 1,073, fea­tured seven ties and 11 lead changes, with nei­ther team hold­ing more than a six point lead un­til the fourth quar­ter. The game’s final tie came at 65-65, af­ter the Gaiters had used a 9-1 run to pull even. Laval re­sponded with an 8-1 run of their own, in­clud­ing five points by Labrecque, to take a 74-66 lead with 5:00 to play.

The Gaiters cut the mar­gin to 78-76 with 3:23 left, af­ter a three-pointer by Tim Hunter (Baie d’urfé, Que.) and a seven­footer by Mike An­drews (Oakville, Ont.), but they could draw no closer. A three-pointer by Xavier Baribeau with 2:01 left proved to be the dag­ger, as he re­stored put Laval up 83-76. The vis­i­tors made four free throws down the stretch to clinch their berth in the post­sea­son.

The loss sul­lied a ca­reer­high 20 points by the Gaiters’ Jeremy LeonardSmith. The Ot­tawa na­tive went 6-for-12 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line be­fore foul­ing out in the late stages. Mukiya Post (Vic­to­ria, B.C.) scored 17 points, as did point guard Sean Mon­plaisir (Toronto, Ont.). Hunter fin­ished with five points, but tied his ca­reer high with eight as­sists. An­drews had a ca­reer-high 15-re­bounds, and also made one block. He con­tin­ues to lead the CIS with 2.1 blocks per game.

The Gaiters con­clude the sea­son with a 9-20 over­all record (9-16 vs. CIS, 4-12 Que­bec). Laval is 12-18 over­all (9-16 CIS, 5-10 Que­bec) with one game re­main­ing in their reg­u­lar sea­son.
