Prices may rise

If it’s a bad year and there is a shortage, the Maple Federation will start selling the reserves. The price of bulk syrup has gone up a little since last year and this may drive the price even higher. The retail market will also be affected by a small harvest.

“There will be a new moon on Thursday and that should change the weather, but will it be enough to save the season?” wondered Mr. Holmes who, to date, has produced at most only 30% of his regular crop. “I recently learnt that in 1891 we had a winter just like this one in Way’s Mills. There was not enough snow on the ground for the farmers to do their work for three months! When my grandfather bought this farm in 1897 they were still sugaring on May 1st. The next year by the end of March it was all over,” added Mr. Holmes.
