many of the teachers are not from Stanstead so they were unaware of the bookstore. She added that she was impressed with how well organized it was and found the program ‘interesting and very generous’. She expressed her appreciation to the Rotary Club on behalf of her students as well, who she noted were very pleased with their free book coupons.
Sunnyside School sent twelve teachers to the event. School Principal, Elaine Baylis-creary, commented that she feels the bookstore is a very good resource for their school. Speaking on behalf of herself, staff and students, she expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club for their generosity. She added that the children were excited with their book coupons, many claiming they would return with their parents to choose their free book.
Helene Hamel, who holds the position of Secretary for the Rotary Club of the Boundary, was asked to comment on behalf of the Rotary Club in regard to this generous initiative. She offered the following statement; “March is Rotary Literacy Month. We wanted to reach out to the community we support and offer free books to the local schools as well as school children. Rotary benefits from the added exposure for the Rotary bookstore in Beebe. Even when we sell the books, they are not expensive: hard covers $1, soft cover .50 and children’s books are only .25 each. Our goal is to keep the books in circulation and get them into the hands of readers. Next book store sale day is Saturday April 7th. Children can come in and redeem their coupons that day (or also in May or June). March literacy month is a win win situation for all!”
According to Ms. Hamel, who helped organize the event, the bookstore awarded over 400 free book coupons and donated approximately 160 books to our local schools’ classrooms. Parents are encouraged to visit the bookstore with their children to collect their free book. Sale proceeds from the store help the Rotary Club contribute to the community through a variety of charitable initiatives.
