National Assembly Medal for Magog couple
On Monday, Orford MNA Pierre Reid presented a National Assembly Medal to André and France Dion under sunny skies in their Magog garden. Quoting from an earlier speech that Mr. Reid made at the National Assembly in 2010, he commented: “André Dion was an ornithologist and environmentalist long before those terms were popular. In 1935, while a student at College Ste-marie, he won a national contest with an essay about “The birds of my country” and he was published in the media. He studied in 1942 at Cornell University, the only school teaching ornithology at the time. His career was launched on the path of birds and he stayed on that path, publishing his 14th book, L’ame des oiseaux, in 2005. That book received the Prix Alphonse Desjardins and the Palme d’or Gutenberg. His most recent publication is the L’odysee du Garrot d’islande en Amerique.”
Of course since that speech was given in 2010, that last sentence is no longer valid because Mr. Dion published two more books
in 2011, Plumes de Ciel and Napoleon-alexandre Comeau au Smithsonian, and is working on three more!
Mr. Reid continued: “Man of action, André Dion is known to naturalists through his mediatic interventions, notably the thousands of ways to attract, house and feed birds. With France,
his wife, he created the Fondation pour la sauvegarde des canards nicheurs en cavité. André and France are also the creators of AutoCorrect-art, a teaching tool used by thousands of children for the last forty years. Furthermore, last March Mr. Dion became a Chevalier de l’ordre de la Pleiade.”
“As we can see, Mr. Dion is a celebrity. However he is also a simple, charming man, an example to all citizens that age is not an obstacle to an active life and that we can play an important role in our society, our region, even at 90 years of age. I asked the National Assembly to engrave the name of his wife France beside the name of Mr. Dion, because I believe that a part of this medal belongs to her as well. Congratulations to both of you!”
André and France Dion were presented with a National Assembly Medal for their “contribution to Quebec society” on Monday, in Magog, from Orford MNA Pierre Reid (middle).
