In the afternoon, a round table discussion with representatives from the municipalities, the universities, tourism, industry and environment was held. In a region where traditional economic activities such as tourism and agriculture are strong, the challenge will be to see how the mining industry and those sectors can co-habitate.

Quebec is in a mining boom. In last week’s provincial budget, Minister Bachand announced that mining sector royalties would grow ten-fold in the next six years, that money is already coming in from the mining sector and he expects royalties in 2011-2012 to almost reach $1.2 billion. The government also expects this increase in revenues to help balance the government’s books by 2013-14.
