New contest for new gardeners

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEFS - Victoria Vanier Stanstead

Ifyou’re interested in making your yard more beautiful this spring and you’d like to do it for free, then you’ll want to head to the Stanstead town hall this Saturday, between 1:00 and 2:00 pm, for the perennial exchange and tree give-away. “People bring their perennials and get coupons for them, then they get new perennials with their coupons,” explained Maryse Trepanier of the town’s Beautification Committee. The town of Stanstead presently holds a rating of three ‘Fleurons’ out of five from the Fleurons du Quebec organization.

The committee will be giving away trees on a first come first served basis. “We have fifty oak saplings and fifty ash saplings to give away, one per family. If someone wants more they can come back at the end to see if there are any leftover,” added Maryse.

To make things more interesting for new gardeners, the Stanstead Beautification committee has a new contest going that will see some lucky gardener win the $100 prize. This contest is open to people who put in a flower bed in their front lawn for the first time. To enter the contest you must first take a photo of your home without the flower bed, then take another photo of your new flower bed when it’s looking its best.

New members are welcome to join the town’s Beautification Committee. There are only four members right now and they are kept pretty busy with the ‘First flower bed’ contest, the Maison Fleuri contest, the Feerie de Noel contest and the Christmas tree decorating activity. For more information about the perennial exchange, the new flower garden contest or joining the Beautification Committee, call Maryse Trepanier at 819 704-0660.
