Stanstead Softball team on way to Nationals
Stanstead’slocal men’s softball team, Team Steve Pizzaria, were the winners in a tournament held in Stanstead over the weekend, winning all six of their games. “I’m very proud of all my guys. We’re a fairly new team and we beat teams that play together every weekend. This town has a good breed of ball players!” said player and team coach, John Langevin. “Our oldest player is 47, today, and our youngest is about 16. We made sure to keep the age limit lower so the kids wouldn’t have to wait until they were eighteen to play. It took a good mix of young and old to win that tournament.” Ten teams from all around the Townships, Sherbrooke, Coaticook, Bromptonville, Richmond and as far away as Trois Rivieres took part over the weekend.
Winning this tournament is helping the local team to qualify for next year’s Canadian National Championship that will be held in Moncton. “To qualify we still have to play another tournament in July, play in the provincials and have a tournament in Stanstead. We have a year to get the team ready,” explained assistant coach Brad Crawford, who is also the president of the new league and plays on the team.
Besides playing softball, this new team has been busy fixing up the ball park on Parc Street, just down from the Pat Burns Arena. “We’ve worked hard as a committee. We’ve painted the bleachers, the bathrooms, the walls, the dugouts, the floors. We have lots of signs of our sponsors up now on the fence around the field; that helped us a lot. We put in the effort because we love ball,” said Mr. Langevin. “We’d also like to thank Henk Stremelaar, the owner of Steve’s Pizzeria, for sponsoring our team,” added Mr. Crawford.
The team’s roster includes: Brad Crawford, Brandon Crook, Derrick Flanders, Nathaniel Jacques, Billy Langevin, John Langevin, Etienne Lessard, John Maddiss, Corey Peck, Sebastien Provost, Stephane Roy, and J.F. Veillette.
