Bottle and can deposit to double

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEFS -

The Minister of Sustainable Development, Pierre Arcand, has announced an increase from 5 to 10 cents for beer and soft drink containers. The deposit price of 5 cents has been in place since the beginning of the program, over twenty-five years ago. “When we realize that the recycling of aluminium takes only 5% of the energy used in the production of aluminium, the increase in the deposit price is good news to encourage the public to recycle more,” said Steven Guilbeault, the assistant coordinator at Equiterre. “This measure is even more necessary because we send twenty million dollars worth of cans to dump sites each year, an unacceptable loss for Quebec society,” he added.

The government is also considering putting a deposit price on other kinds of containers.
