Firefighters go bald at Borderfest

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Victoria Vanier Stanstead

TheStanstead Fire Department always likes to be a part of the BorderFest activities and this year is no exception. What is new is how they will be taking part: several of the firefighters will be getting their heads shaved during Stanstead’s annual event to raise money to support children with cancer.

Eric Blanchette and Jean Fluet are the first Stanstead firefighters to ‘throw their hat (or should I say their head) into the ring’, and they have already begun collecting donations for their Leucan Shaved Head Challenge. “I’m expecting a few more firefighters to join in soon,” said Mr. Blanchette who initiated the idea for the fundraiser.

Eric, although not looking forward to getting his long hair shaved off, is happy with how his fundraising is going so far. “I set a personal goal of $100 and I’m already up to around $500. I’ve just been going around town confronting people, family and friends, and lots of people have been donating,” he commented. The firefighter really hit pay dirt when he visited the Abco Stc Inc. plant in the Beebe sector. “I raised about $150 from the employees at the shop and then the boss matched their donation!” Anyone who donates $20 or more can get a tax receipt.

Stanstead firefighter Eric Blanchette will be getting his head shaved at BorderFest to raise money to help children suffering from cancer.

Mr. Blanchette estimates that his hair should be about four inches long when he gets it all shaved off at the BorderFest on July 7th. “I like my hair! Once, when I was younger, I was thinking of shaving my head and everyone said I would look like an idiot, so now I think I’m going to look like an idiot! And I have a wedding to go to two months later!” he concluded, sounding more than a little nervous.
