Im­aged Per­spec­tive to open at the MAC

It’sbeen months in the plan­ning, or­ga­niz­ing and in­stal­la­tion of the up­com­ing sum­mer-long ex­hibit at the MAC Cen­ter for the Arts on Main Street, New­port. The result will open for its two month run on Fri­day, July 6th at a spe­cial open­ing re­cep­tion at the cen­ter from 5-8 p.m..

Jim McKimm, MAC Pres­i­dent and ex­hibit co­or­di­na­tor/de­signer sought out and re­ceived a great deal of as­sis­tance from Roger Car­tee, Don Whip­ple, Liz Nel­son from the Old Stone House, Bar­bara Mal­loy from the Mem­phrem­a­gog His­tor­i­cal So­ci­ety of New­port and Jen­nifer Hop­kins

In addition, a call for artists re­sulted in over 40 ‘new’ paint­ings and pho­to­graphs de­pict­ing scenes in New­port.

The ex­hibit fea­tures 47 pho­tos from the Richardson/Car­tee Col­lec­tion. Harry Wen­dell Richardson made photo post­cards out of his shop in New­port start­ing in 1918 with most of them be­ing pho­tos from north­ern Ver­mont. Roger Car­tee, for­mer owner and pub­lisher of the New­port Daily Ex­press ac­quired the al­most 9,000 neg­a­tives for the pho­tos. Pho­tog­ra­pher Don Whip­ple and his staff have dig­i­tized the col­lec­tion which is stored at the Old Stone House Mu­seum and sup­plied the over­sized prints for the ex­hibit. Roger Car­tee will be on hand to dis­cuss the col­lec­tion.

Post­cards from the Alexan­der Col­lec­tion at the Old Stone House and pri­vate col­lec­tion of Jen­nifer Hop­kins were en­larged and hung with the new works cre­ated by MAC artists.

Vin­tage cloth­ing from the Palin/Lind­sey Col­lec­tion, as well as mem­o­ra­bilia pieces were made avail­able through Bar­bara Mal­loy, Pres­i­dent of the Mem­phrem­a­gog His­tor­i­cal So­ci­ety of New­port.

Avail­able for pur­chase will be the of­fi­cial ex­hibit poster which fea­tures sev­eral old post­cards and new works by MAC mem­bers Mary Bren­ner, Ann Lis­ner and Ni­cole Warner. A poster, signed by the artists will be given as a door prize for those at­tend­ing the open­ing.

In addition to the loan of the ex­hibits’ con­tent, fund­ing for the ex­hibit was made pos­si­ble through the sup­port of Jay Peak Re­sort, The New­port Ro­tary, Columbia For­est Prod­ucts, New­port City Re­nais­sance Cor­po­ra­tion, Com­mu­nity Bank, Pas­sump­sic Bank, North Coun­try Hos­pi­tal, Baan Thai Cui­sine,Your Name Here Em­broi­dery, John Stevens, Lit­tle Gnesta B&B, Bella Doni Pot­tery, Ann Lsiner and Phyl­lis Joy Ham­mond. A pre-ex­hibit book­let is avail­able at sev­eral of the spon­sors lo­ca­tions as well as the MAC Cen­ter and VT North Coun­try Cham­ber at the Cause­way. They will also be avail­able dur­ing the ex­hibit.

There Open­ing Re­cep­tion on Thurs­day, July 6th from 5-8 PM will fea­ture a light repast, and mu­sic by a cham­ber group from the New­port Area Com­mu­nity Orches­tra. The Ex­hibit is free and will re­main through La­bor Day. For more in­for­ma­tion, call the Cen­ter at (802)334-1966.
