A wonderful visit to North Hatley

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM - North Hatley Michel Grimard North Hatley

Last Friday, a group of North Hatley citizens hosted 40 young campers and their counsellors from Camp Massawippi (www. mabmackay.ca) for a luncheon and an afternoon of activities. These campers are all young people, six to thirty years of age, who have motor, hearing or visual impairments.

Around 11am, the campers arrived on 5 pontoon boats from Ayer’s Cliff. They disembarked at the North Hatley Club. Given that the majority of campers are in wheelchairs it was quite the undertaking and a team effort on the part of the staff to transfer all the campers from the boats back onto solid ground.

As a group, with their bright orange Camp Massawippi t-shirts, they did not go unnoticed. They passed right through the center of North Hatley and on to La Maison Lucien Vachon (the community hall next to the Catholic Church) where a picnic lunch awaited them and musicians, a juggler and a clown performed for them.

Despite the scorching heat, the campers were delighted by the performers. Around 4pm, pleased with their visit, they left again to reembark on the pontoon boats to take them back to Camp Massawippi in Ayer’s Cliff.

Camp Massawippi celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2011. By welcoming these young people and offering them a summer camp adapted to their needs and capabilities, their families are also able to enjoy a well-deserved break. Some of the campers come from as far away as Toronto and Nova Scotia.

We had the opportunity to chat with them and took lots of photos which we will give them when they leave.

I would like to emphasize the extraordinary work done by the counsellors (young people from our region; we should be proud!) and by the administration. We felt a wonderful spirit of unity and team work from this organization.

Thank you to all the campers for coming to visit us in North Hatley. Thank you to all the counsellors and staff for their professionalism. Thank you to the director, Nathalie Roy and to Rachel Desjourdy, the Programs Coordinator, for all the wonderful work that you do.

We will invite you all back again next year!

The 40 young campers from Camp Massawippi had lots of fun at the picnic lunch in North Hatley last Friday noon and as seen on this picture, so did the clown!
