QNEK 19th SEASON opens with

RUTHLESS! The Musical

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM - Derby Line, VT Stanstead Qc

What would you do for a part in a play? In the case of Tina Denmark, an

adorable 12-year-old, the question is really: “What wouldn’t you do?”

QNEK Productions, International Theatre Company in Residence at the Haskell Opera House, opens its 2012 Season with the production of Ruthless! The Musical, featuring music by Marvin Laird and book and lyrics by Joal Paley, under the direction of Susan-Lynn Johns. The musical is presented through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., NY.

Never heard of this musical? Well, we guarantee you won’t forget it once you’ve seen it. Winner of the New York Outer Critics Circle

Award for the Best Off-Broadway Musical of 1993, this clever little musical features upbeat songs and an intriguing plot with twists and turns guaranteed to keep you guessing. Absolutely no one will be seated during the final eleven minutes of the show! The synopsis: Tina’s school is presenting a school musical, Pippi in

Tahiti, and Tina didn’t get the lead. But this star struck diva isn’t about to be out shown. She hatches an evil plan, much to the horror of her quintessentially suburban mother, Judy, and the delight of her conniving manager, Sylvia St. Croix.

Ruthless! plays this over-the-top comedy for everything it›s worth, with outrageous jokes and can-you-believe-it complications. But there are also other shows running underneath: an amazingly written parody of The Bad Seed, All About Eve, Gypsy, Valley of the Dolls, The Women, Mame and about a million more. The show lampoons musicals, backstage musicals and even musicals about backstage musicals.

In the leading roles are twelve year old April Streeter ( Barton) playing Tina Denmark, Anita Morin ( Derby Line) as Judy Denmark, and Eileen Kennedy (Newport) as Sylvia St Croix. Supporting ensemble includes Sally Rivard ( Jay) as Miss Thorn, the school marm; Michele Streeter (Barton) as three characters, Louise and Betty Lerman and Eve; Chloe Bouchard (North Hatley, Quebec) as Emily Block, the reporter; and a special appearance by Lynn Leimer as Lita Encore, Tina’s grandmother and notorious theatre critic. A special surprise cameo to this all female cast punctuates the finale. Pianist Janice Gluck, Stephen Laurie on bass, and percussionist Shawn McAllister provide excellent musical backup to these dames. Ruthless! is to die for.

Ruthless! opens July 13, 7:30 p.m. and continues, July 20, 21 at 7:30 (Audio described by the VT Council for the Blind). The show is underwritten by Herons Path, Paul Decelles Financial Strategies, North Country Hospital, Passumpsic Savings Bank, Community National Bank, Rotary Club of Newport, Hoagies Pie and Pasta, Fred’s Plumbing and Heating, Columbia Forest Productions, Jay Peak Resort, The Front Desk, and Whimsey Works Vermont.
