Upstaged by a squirrel

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM -

On Saturday September 22nd, I was among many people from the community all gathered at the town square for the inauguration of the clock tower. It was a happy and exciting time. After months of preparation and work, we all got a chance to show our appreciation to the many individuals who donated their time and contributed in the creation of the clock. One such person was my brother Guy Cloutier. He put in over 50 hours on the computer making 8 models of the clock so the committee would have a good choice. Then, after the model was picked, he sent an electronic file with all of the details to the granite companies so that they could make the individual pieces and they would all fit together. He visited each one of those companies and individuals and explained to them what was needed. He searched the internet to find the clock itself. He was present at all of the clock committee meetings, every day of the symposium and again while the clock tower was being assembled in the square. Needless to say I was looking forward to shouting and clapping when his turn came. His name was called and while he was making his way up to join the other contributors, Robert Sheldon, the presenter, was distracted by a squirrel that was running on the wire overhead. After making a comment about the squirrel, he returned to his list on the paper and proceeded to call the next name. No more mention of Guy’s contributions to the making of the tower and no applause for Guy... I was dumbfounded. There I was, hands apart and ready to clap and my jaw dropped as Bob called the next name. I should have asked Bob to repeat Guy’s introduction so that we could all applaud, but I didn’t and I regret it. The time had passed and Guy missed out on the recognition he so richly deserved. He didn’t do it for the pat on the back but it would have been nice to be acknowledged by his peers and the community on a job well done. Guy, your moment is gone, but I want you to know that I am so proud of you. The clock tower is beautiful and it will be a lasting testament to your dedication to all of the little details concerning every aspect of its creation. I applaud you with all my heart. Your sister who loves you very much. Denise Mueller,
