Redmen Top Gaiters on Gridiron
TheBishop’s Gaiters football team fell 34-20 to the McGill Redmen last Thursday night at Percival Molson Stadium. The loss drops Bishop’s to 2-4 while the Redmen improve to 2-4 and now hold the tiebreaker between the two teams.
The Gaiters got off to a fast start as Jordan Heather (Oromocto, NB) connected with Alexander Fox (Montreal West, QC) on a 40 yard touchdown just 5:12 into the game. McGill answered with a field goal and rouge before the quarter ended. Bishop’s looked to grab momentum but a David Haddrall (Kingston, ON) pass on a fake field goal fell incomplete. Bishop’s held a 7-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Redmen added another field goal 7:27 into the second frame and after a conceded safety they led 9-7. The Gaiters answered back with a major as Heather scampered 16 yards to give the purple and white a 14-9 halftime lead.
The Gaiters received the second half kickoff but it was the Redmen who capitalized. They picked off Heather deep in the Bishop’s territory and eventually scored on a Jonathan Collin one yard quarterback sneak. The Gaiters’ Mathieu Paquette (Magog, QC) and Redmen’s Samy Rassy exchanged field goals giving McGill a 19-17 advantage after three quarters.
Rassy and Paquette again exchanged field goals to open the final frame. McGill took control and momentum when Ryne Bondy connected with Shaquille Johnson for a 30 yard catch and run to the end zone. The play came on second down and long 8:38 into the quarter. The score extended McGill’s lead to 29-20. Bishop’s conceded another safety giving the Redmen an 11 point lead. Rassy kicked his fifth field goal of the night with less than a minute to go put the nail in the Gaiters coffin. It gave the Redmen a 34-20 victory. It was McGill’s first win against an RSEQ opponent since October 3, 2009.
The Redmen’s 14 point victory also gives them any tiebreaker over the Gaiters.
Next up for Bishop’s is the annual Mayors Cup matchup with the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (2-3) on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on the Université de Sherbrooke stadium field. Get all of your Gaiters sports information at www. gaiters.ca.
