Gyp­sies still per­se­cuted in Europe

they are part of the Roma mi­nor­ity who are sub­ject to abuse in ev­ery coun­try in Europe. Also called Gyp­sies, even France, with its tradition of wel­com­ing all im­mi­grants, has been tak­ing mea­sures against them lately.

The Euro­pean Community has gone as far as hav­ing a Decade of Roma In­clu­sion de­clared in 2005 to com­bat the racism that the Roma are sub­jected to, not only in Ro­ma­nia but in neigh­bour­ing coun­tries. Canada went as far, in 2008, as to send then Gover­nor Gen­eral Michaelle Jean to Hun­gary to con­vey Canada’s con­cerns re­gard­ing the is­sue.
