TheBishop’s Gaiters men’s lacrosse team took one step closer to defending their Bagattaway Cup Championship when they beat the Queen’s Gaels 13-12 in the CUFLA East Wild Card Game. They move onto the 2012 Bagattaway Cup Championships hosted at Trent University. Also in action on Saturday were the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The Gaiters lacrosse squad got off to a ferocious start scoring three goals in the first 5:12 of the game. They extended their lead to 6-1 as the first quarter come to a close. A quiet second quarter saw the Gaiters score twice then take two late penalties. At the half Bishop’s was up 8-1. Queen’s took advantage of an early power play and scored less than a minute into the third frame. The goal gave the visitors momentum on the gorgeous Lennoxville night. The Gaels scored eight goals in the frame to come all the way back and tie the game at 9-9.

Bishop’s tightened up defensively, scored twice and took an 11-9 lead seven minutes into the fourth quarter. The purple and white took a bench penalty with just over a minute left giving Queen’s a power play. The Gaels were unable to capitalize and the Gaiters held onto the 13-12 victory. With the win, Bishop’s has punched their ticket back to the Bagattaway Cup Championships. They will take place at Trent University from November 2-4. The women’s basketball team played their second of three games on Saturday at the Don Grant Classic in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Gaiters lost to the UNB Varsity Reds 66-61. They concluded the three day tournament with a tilt against the UPEI Panthers on Sunday.
