High project estimates

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM -

The item was not on the agenda of the council meeting and, if this newspaper had not raised the issue, would have gone unnoticed. Evaluation has risen, on average, around 20% and ranges between 4% to 60% increases.

In announced items, the town has awarded, seemingly without bids and only to some of the town’s real estate agents, the contract to sell the lots of the Domaine des Pionniers in Beebe. If the agents sell the lots themselves, they will get a full commission of 6% and, if they are sold by the town, they will still get 3%. In another item, the close to twenty citizens attending the Monday Night meeting learned that the town will foot the bill for a website promoting the Domaine at a cost of over $3,000.

This is a thousand dollars less than the $4,000 that an employee will now get as a yearly and permanent ‘retention ‘ bonus if he works for the town for 30 years, this being part of the newly announced salary policy of the town, offering nine levels over eighteen years of seniority.

Seems that the Charbonneau Commission’s message is not really getting through in the outer reaches of the Province as estimates for the Junction street project, in Beebe, came so over budget that the project is now postponed, if not in limbo. The town was asked by this newspaper the percentage of ‘extras’ that contractors billed the town. The director general will come back with an answer at next month’s meeting.
