MBB: Gaiters Stunned By Stingers In Opener

Stanstead Journal - - SPORTS - Sherbrooke, Lennoxville

TheBishop’s Gaiters suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night as they opened their regular season. Bishop’s led by 12 points with just over two minutes to play but the Stingers came back to steal a 77-76 victory in front of a boisterous Mitchell Gymnasium crowd.

Bishop’s was eager to get the regular season going as they had yet to step onto the hardwood in 2012-13 while the Stingers entered with a 2-0 record. Bishop’s came out strong jumping out to a 19-15 lead after the first quarter. The Stingers answered back with a big second frame, outscoring Bishop’s 23-16 and snatching a 38-35 halftime advantage.

In the third the Gaiters inverted the second quarter score as fans inside Mitchell Gymnasium really started to play a factor. The hosts led 58-54 entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth Bishop’s took control in the first eight minutes, extending their lead up to 12 points with just under three minutes remaining. Concordia started to chip away although it looked to be too little too late. The turning point appeared to come as the Gaiters were assessed a technical foul with 2:15 remaining when they broke from a timeout and had some confusion as to whether they were able to make a substitution. Despite the error Bishop’s continued to lead by nine points. The Gaiters were unable to put the final nail in the coffin as three times in the last thirty seconds they could only split a pair of free throws.

The Gaiters could not get a shot off and the Stingers snuck away a 77-76 victory, their third of the year.

Bishop’s could only manage a 1-9 effort from three point range but were 28-60 from the floor.

Next up for Bishop’s (0-1) the Laval Rouge et Or (0-2) are in town on Saturday, November 24th. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gymnasium.
