Spartan tournament this weekend
Just because the NHL players and owners are still battling it out doesn’t mean there isn’t any great hockey to watch. The Stanstead College Spartans will be hosting their 15th Annual Invitational Senior Boys Hockey Tournament, this weekend at the Pat Burns Arena, and there should be plenty of action. “We’re expecting a very good pool of players and teams,” said coach James Rioux about the three-day tournament that begins on Friday morning. For the last five years the Spartans have made it to the finals, winning the first three times then losing to Hill Academy in 2011 and Cegep Ste-Foy in 2012. Eight elite teams from the MPHL (Midwest Prep Hockey League) will take part in this Round Robin tournament with the final taking place Sunday afternoon at 3:30. “The team has been doing well and we’re excited to be playing at home,” added coach Rioux. There will be a small admission fee and game times can be found on the Stanstead College website.
The Spartans have just returned from a very successful week of away games. On January 1st and 2nd they competed in the Tabor Academy New Year’s Tournament where they won two (3 to 2 against Milton in overtime and 2 – 0 against Hill School) of three games, losing only to Tabor 2 to 1 in the final. From January 4th to the 6th the Spartans were at the St. Francis Tournament in Buffalo, New York. “There we won all three Round Robin games but lost to St. Andrew’s in the final,” said Mr. Rioux. Two Spartans were named to the ‘All-tournament’ team following that contest: captain Lucas Zwaagstra and assistant captain Landon Gareau.
Talented teams will face off in this weekend’s tournament.
