Gaiters And Citadins On The Hard­wood

The Bishop’s Gaiters bas­ket­ball teams will wrap up a home and home se­ries with the UQAM Citadins on Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 9th. The teams tipped off in Mon­treal on Sun­day night with the UQAM women and Bishop’s men coming out on top. Wed­nes­day’s games will take place in Mitchell Gym­na­sium on the Bishop’s Univer­sity cam­pus with the women start­ing at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.

The Bishop’s Gaiters women (0-4) strug­gled to find their scor­ing touch on Sun­day. The Citadins pulled away early and even­tu­ally won 76-50. The Gaiters were led by Gabrielle Chamberland (Sher­brooke) who scored 19 points in a los­ing cause, in­clud­ing an 11-16 per­for­mance from the free throw line. Chamberland is av­er­ag­ing 15 points per game, plac­ing her fourth in the league. She also leads the league in free throws hav­ing at­tempted 42.

UQAM (4-1) boasts the league’s top scorer in Emie Si­mard (Varennes, Que­bec). She is av­er­ag­ing 17.3 points per game how­ever did not play in Sun­day’s con­test. The Citadins cur­rently sit tied atop the RSEQ stand­ings with the Con­cor­dia Stingers.

The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s team (3-1) is on a three game league win­ning streak and a six game over­all win streak as they posted a per­fect 3-0 record at the UQAM Hol­i­day Clas­sic. On Sun­day they snuck out a 68-66 vic­tory over the Citadins de­spite hold­ing a lead as large as 13 points in the third frame. Fifth year cap­tain Tim Hunter (Baie D’urfe, Que­bec) led the way for Bishop’s with 16 points while Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ot­tawa) and On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, On­tario) each chipped in with 12. Mike An­drews (Oakville, On­tario) had three blocks, bring­ing his league lead to 14.

Bishop’s cur­rently sits tied atop the RSEQ stand­ing with the McGill Red­men at 3-1. The Con­cor­dia Stingers (3-2) are also up there but have played one more game than their foes. The Gaiters de­feated the Red­men in Mon­treal to close out the first se­mes­ter.

Wed­nes­day’s game marks the first of four straight hump days the Gaiters will play in Mitchell Gym­na­sium. Both the men’s and women’s games can be viewed live on SSN Canada.
