Population grows in region
The region’s most recent population figures came out, last week, with the publication of the annual Gazette officielle du
Quebec. Both the Memphremagog MRC and the Coaticook MRC gained a significant number of new residents in the last year.
In the Memphremagog MRC, growth was seen in the following municipalities: Orford with 393 new residents, an increase of 11.7%; Austin saw an increase of 274, 16.6%; Eastman gained 194 residents; Hatley Township gained 134; Ayer’s Cliff gained 70; Potton saw an increase of 72 people; Ogden gained 60; Stanstead Township gained 33; while Stanstead has ten new residents. Even St. Benoit de lac went up in number by 4. Communities in the Memphremagog MRC that went down in number were: North Hatley by 100; Magog by 97; Hatley by 61; and Ste. Catherine de Hatley by 53.
The town of Coaticook added 197 to its total, growing to 9,276 residents. Compton came in at a surprisingly close second with 175 new residents, growing to 3,149, while Waterville went up by 26 to a total of 2,061. Barnston Ouest increased by 3.7% and Dixville went up by 2%.
Stanstead East decreased by .8%, going down to 605 in number. The remote and somewhat isolated community of East Hereford was the biggest loser, decreasing in population by 15.4%.
