Pop­u­la­tion grows in re­gion

The re­gion’s most re­cent pop­u­la­tion fig­ures came out, last week, with the publi­ca­tion of the an­nual Gazette of­fi­cielle du

Que­bec. Both the Mem­phrem­a­gog MRC and the Coat­i­cook MRC gained a sig­nif­i­cant num­ber of new res­i­dents in the last year.

In the Mem­phrem­a­gog MRC, growth was seen in the fol­low­ing mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties: Or­ford with 393 new res­i­dents, an in­crease of 11.7%; Austin saw an in­crease of 274, 16.6%; East­man gained 194 res­i­dents; Hat­ley Town­ship gained 134; Ayer’s Cliff gained 70; Pot­ton saw an in­crease of 72 peo­ple; Og­den gained 60; Stanstead Town­ship gained 33; while Stanstead has ten new res­i­dents. Even St. Benoit de lac went up in num­ber by 4. Com­mu­ni­ties in the Mem­phrem­a­gog MRC that went down in num­ber were: North Hat­ley by 100; Ma­gog by 97; Hat­ley by 61; and Ste. Cather­ine de Hat­ley by 53.

The town of Coat­i­cook added 197 to its to­tal, grow­ing to 9,276 res­i­dents. Comp­ton came in at a sur­pris­ingly close sec­ond with 175 new res­i­dents, grow­ing to 3,149, while Water­ville went up by 26 to a to­tal of 2,061. Barn­ston Ouest in­creased by 3.7% and Dixville went up by 2%.

Stanstead East de­creased by .8%, go­ing down to 605 in num­ber. The re­mote and some­what iso­lated com­mu­nity of East Here­ford was the big­gest loser, de­creas­ing in pop­u­la­tion by 15.4%.
