Gaiters Fall Just Short In The Provincial Capital
TheBishop’s Gaiters basketball teams faced off against the Laval Rouge et Or last Saturday night in Quebec City. Both teams fell in the final minute. The women lost 50-46 and the men came up short 69-67.
The Lady Gaiters had a forceful start to the game taking a 6-0 lead on the Rouge et Or. Laval came back to close the lead after the first quarter 11-8. It was close through the second, with both teams shooting above 35 percent from beyond the arc. The Rouge et Or took a small 25-23 lead at half. Play was tightly contested at both ends of the floor in the third and fourth quarters. The Gaiters had a one point lead in the last 40 seconds of the fourth but Laval answered with a three pointer to take a two point lead. Bishop’s never recovered and the Rouge et Or won the game 50-46.
Bishop’s top scorer was Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) with 15 points. Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ontario) contributed 13 points and nine rebounds and Catherine Rondeau (Sherbrooke) had 11 points and seven assists in the closely contested game. Marjorie Ferland (Quebec City) had 10 points and five assists in the Rouge et Or win while Elyse Jobin (Moncton) had nine points and six rebounds.
The Bishop’s men’s basketball team took to the court on Saturday after an exciting women’s match. The men had a slow start as the Rouge et Or took the first quarter 20-12. The Gaiters showed their strong shooting ability and responded to take a 35-28 halftime advantage. Laval fought back in the third diminishing Bishop’s lead. They took the lead early in the fourth quarter. The score was 60-53 Laval with less than six minutes to play. Bishop’s pursued a comeback but fell just short in the final minute, falling 69-67.
Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for the Gaiters. Jonathan Bermillo (Montreal) put up 12 points and Matt McLean (Ottawa) had four blocks. Thibaud Dezutter (Namur) managed 20 points for the Rouge et Or. Boris Hadzimuratovic (Sarajevo) contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds to Laval’s win.
The Gaiters will be home this upcoming week to take on the McGill Martlets and Redmen. The two will face off for the third time this season today Wednesday, January 30th in Mitchell Gymnasium. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
