Gaiters Men Top Redmen And Take First Place
TheBishop’s University basketball teams had another mid-week meeting with the McGill Martlets and Redmen. They faced off last Wednesday night in Mitchell Gymnasium. The women’s game was closely contested as the Martlets took it 73-56. The Gaiters men won 56-42 over the Redmen.
The McGill Martlets started strong with 13-0 run in the first quarter but the Gaiters found their grove and brought the score back to 24-10 at the end of the frame. Bishop’s opened the second quarter by draining two three pointers which cut the Martlets lead to one. Bishop’s won the quarter 19-15 but McGill took the half 39-29. In
the third McGill continued to push their lead and took the quarter 18-14. The Gaiters could not keep up with the number one team in the RESQ and McGill won 73-56 in commanding fashion.
Bishop’s top scorer was Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ontario) contributed 13 points and five rebounds to the Gaiters effort. Helene Bibeau (St. Bruno, Quebec) had 19 points and six boards for the Martlets. Mariam Sylla (Conakry, Guinea) had 15 points and 15 rebounds.
“We started off really slow but were able to bounce back,” said Alex Perno, Gaiters head coach. “Ultimately we made too many mental mistakes that cost us the game. Gabrielle Chamberland has been our MVP all year, she brings it every game.”
In the men’s game Bishop’s owned the first quarter, opening with back to back to back three pointers. The Gaiters took a 25-8 lead. Bishop’s continued their dominance in the second quarter but the Redmen shot well and outscored the Gaiters 16-14 to make the halftime score 39-24. A low scoring third quarter for both teams, 7-6 McGill, kept the Gaiters lead intact. The fourth quarter ended tied 11-11 as Bishop’s took the game 56-42. The Redmen’s 42 points is the lowest the Gaiters have allowed all season. With the win the Gaiters take first place in the RESQ.
The Gaiters top scorer was Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) with 12 points and five rebounds. Scott Ring (Ottawa) helped out with four assists. Tim Hunter (Baie D’Urfe, Quebec) contributed 10 points and nine rebounds to Bishop’s win. For the Redmen, Nathan Joyal (St. Lazare, Quebec) had 11 points and four rebounds and Winn Clark (Mission Hills, Kansas) had nine points and three rebounds.
“I’m not entirely satisfied,” Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin said. “We made too many mistakes down the stretch. Scott (Ring) was able to hold it together for us.”
