Gaiters Men Top Red­men And Take First Place

TheBishop’s Univer­sity bas­ket­ball teams had an­other mid-week meet­ing with the McGill Martlets and Red­men. They faced off last Wed­nes­day night in Mitchell Gym­na­sium. The women’s game was closely con­tested as the Martlets took it 73-56. The Gaiters men won 56-42 over the Red­men.

The McGill Martlets started strong with 13-0 run in the first quar­ter but the Gaiters found their grove and brought the score back to 24-10 at the end of the frame. Bishop’s opened the sec­ond quar­ter by drain­ing two three point­ers which cut the Martlets lead to one. Bishop’s won the quar­ter 19-15 but McGill took the half 39-29. In

the third McGill con­tin­ued to push their lead and took the quar­ter 18-14. The Gaiters could not keep up with the num­ber one team in the RESQ and McGill won 73-56 in com­mand­ing fash­ion.

Bishop’s top scorer was Gabrielle Chamberland (Sher­brooke, Que­bec) with 20 points and seven re­bounds. Ri­ley Shkimba (Kingston, On­tario) contributed 13 points and five re­bounds to the Gaiters ef­fort. He­lene Bibeau (St. Bruno, Que­bec) had 19 points and six boards for the Martlets. Mariam Sylla (Con­akry, Guinea) had 15 points and 15 re­bounds.

“We started off really slow but were able to bounce back,” said Alex Perno, Gaiters head coach. “Ul­ti­mately we made too many men­tal mis­takes that cost us the game. Gabrielle Chamberland has been our MVP all year, she brings it ev­ery game.”

In the men’s game Bishop’s owned the first quar­ter, open­ing with back to back to back three point­ers. The Gaiters took a 25-8 lead. Bishop’s con­tin­ued their dom­i­nance in the sec­ond quar­ter but the Red­men shot well and outscored the Gaiters 16-14 to make the half­time score 39-24. A low scor­ing third quar­ter for both teams, 7-6 McGill, kept the Gaiters lead in­tact. The fourth quar­ter ended tied 11-11 as Bishop’s took the game 56-42. The Red­men’s 42 points is the low­est the Gaiters have al­lowed all sea­son. With the win the Gaiters take first place in the RESQ.

The Gaiters top scorer was Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ot­tawa) with 12 points and five re­bounds. Scott Ring (Ot­tawa) helped out with four as­sists. Tim Hunter (Baie D’Urfe, Que­bec) contributed 10 points and nine re­bounds to Bishop’s win. For the Red­men, Nathan Joyal (St. Lazare, Que­bec) had 11 points and four re­bounds and Winn Clark (Mis­sion Hills, Kansas) had nine points and three re­bounds.

“I’m not en­tirely sat­is­fied,” Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin said. “We made too many mis­takes down the stretch. Scott (Ring) was able to hold it to­gether for us.”
