Chamberland And Leonard-smith Named Provigo Robert La­fond Ath­letes Of The Week

TheBishop’s Univer­sity De­part­ment of Ath­let­ics and Recre­ation is pleased to an­nounce that bas­ket­ball play­ers Gabrielle Chamberland and Jeremy Leonard-Smith have been named Provigo Robert La­fond Ath­letes of the Week. The two stu­dent-ath­letes each had stand­out per­for­mances a pair of games last week.

Chamberland, a Sher­brooke, Que­bec na­tive wins the award for the sec­ond time this year (Jan­uary 13th, 2013). De­spite the Lady Gaiters drop­ping games at home to McGill and in Mon­treal against UQAM, the busi­ness ma­jor made her pres­ence felt on the score sheet. On Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 30th in Mitchell Gym­na­sium she scored 20 points, grabbed seven re­bounds, had three as­sists and a pair of steals in 38 min­utes of play­ing time. She fol­lowed that per­for­mance up with 24 points on Satur­day against UQAM. The Lady Gaiters fell 65-54 but Chamberland as­serted her­self as one of the league’s top scor­ers. She also added six re­bounds, four steals and two as­sists in 36 min­utes on the floor.

“Gab has been our MVP,” said Gaiters head coach Alex Perno af­ter Wed­nes­day’s game. “She brings it ev­ery game.”

Leonard-Smith and his Gaiters won a pair of games last week to grab sole pos­ses­sion of first place in the RSEQ. Bishop’s sits at 8-4, one win ahead McGill (7-4) and a game up on Con­cor­dia (7-5). The Ot­tawa na­tive showed why he is one of the Gaiters lead­ers last week as he scored 12 points, grabbed five re­bounds, had two as­sists and two steals in 28 min­utes on the court as Bishop’s topped the No. 10 McGill Red­men 56-42 on Wed­nes­day night in Len­noxville. He backed that up with 17 points, five re­bounds, three as­sists and two steals on Satur­day in Mon­treal as the Gaiters snuck by UQAM 75-74. The his­tory ma­jor was 3-6 from be­hind the arc in that con­test.

“Jeremy had a con­sis­tent week,” said Rod Gilpin, Gaiters head coach. “He is get­ting back to the level of play he was at in Oc­to­ber.”

Chamberland and her Gaiters will take to the court on Fri­day, Fe­bru­ary 8th at 6 p.m. as the Con­cor­dia Stingers (8-4) are in town. Tipoff in Mitchell Gym­na­sium is at 6 p.m. LeonardSmith will look to lead his Gaiters men’s squad in their most im­por­tant match-up of the year on Fri­day. The Stingers visit Mitchell Gym­na­sium at 8 p.m.
