Chamberland And Leonard-smith Named Provigo Robert Lafond Athletes Of The Week
TheBishop’s University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that basketball players Gabrielle Chamberland and Jeremy Leonard-Smith have been named Provigo Robert Lafond Athletes of the Week. The two student-athletes each had standout performances a pair of games last week.
Chamberland, a Sherbrooke, Quebec native wins the award for the second time this year (January 13th, 2013). Despite the Lady Gaiters dropping games at home to McGill and in Montreal against UQAM, the business major made her presence felt on the score sheet. On Wednesday, January 30th in Mitchell Gymnasium she scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, had three assists and a pair of steals in 38 minutes of playing time. She followed that performance up with 24 points on Saturday against UQAM. The Lady Gaiters fell 65-54 but Chamberland asserted herself as one of the league’s top scorers. She also added six rebounds, four steals and two assists in 36 minutes on the floor.
“Gab has been our MVP,” said Gaiters head coach Alex Perno after Wednesday’s game. “She brings it every game.”
Leonard-Smith and his Gaiters won a pair of games last week to grab sole possession of first place in the RSEQ. Bishop’s sits at 8-4, one win ahead McGill (7-4) and a game up on Concordia (7-5). The Ottawa native showed why he is one of the Gaiters leaders last week as he scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, had two assists and two steals in 28 minutes on the court as Bishop’s topped the No. 10 McGill Redmen 56-42 on Wednesday night in Lennoxville. He backed that up with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals on Saturday in Montreal as the Gaiters snuck by UQAM 75-74. The history major was 3-6 from behind the arc in that contest.
“Jeremy had a consistent week,” said Rod Gilpin, Gaiters head coach. “He is getting back to the level of play he was at in October.”
Chamberland and her Gaiters will take to the court on Friday, February 8th at 6 p.m. as the Concordia Stingers (8-4) are in town. Tipoff in Mitchell Gymnasium is at 6 p.m. LeonardSmith will look to lead his Gaiters men’s squad in their most important match-up of the year on Friday. The Stingers visit Mitchell Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
