Youth Leadership: Matthew Nutbrown

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM -

MatthewNutbrown is a phenomenal member of the Lennoxville Youth Center team and active participant in the community – near and abroad. Matthew has been an animator at the youth center since April 2012. Since that time, I’ve had to opportunity to get to know Matthew and it has become very evident that his community is very important to him. His work within the community goes unnoticed; however, I hope to change that today.

Aside from being an animator at the youth center, a busy education student, and rugby player at Bishop’s University, Matthew still finds the time to volunteer as a coach for the Alexander Galt football team. His passion for sports and working with youth is very apparent. Matthew, for a second year, worked at the Lennoxville Day Camp this summer. The week after day camp ended, he volunteered his time for a sports camp – where many of the day campers attended. His outgoing personality and dedicated nature make for a tremendous role model on and off the field. Besides volunteering on the field, he has donated his time to soup kitchens and has worked with the Coalition des Travailleurs de Rues, bringing sandwiches to the hardworking street workers.

While Matthew continues to be very active within the Lennoxville community, he has also gone abroad to volunteer his time. Earlier this year, Matthew went to Australia and worked with an organization called “Youth with a Mission.” His main duties consisted of working with youth in aboriginal communities in Papua New Guinea and various other locations in Australia. He strives to make a difference, whether it is in our own backyard, or on the other side of the world. He has played a major role in the logistical planning of the youth center’s upcoming New Orleans humanitarian trip. He has taken it upon himself to help prepare our youth for what they are about to experience. Matthew continues to prove that when you have a passion, not even borders can limit you.

Matthew is a prime example of a young citizen who truly cares about his community and it shows. He works hard and strives to make a difference – no matter how big or small the outcome. He is an outstanding role model for every single young person whom he comes in contact with. His happy disposition and great sense of humour are appreciated by everyone who knows him. It is a privilege to work with such an accomplished young man, and at the age of twenty, that is something to be extremely proud of. Matthew has had a bright past, so I can’t even imagine how bright his future will be.
