Sunnyside students visit nation’s capital
In Quebec at the end of June, thousands upon thousands of graduating grade six students will take to the road for a day or two, accompanied by teachers and parents, for a special experience: the end of elementary school class trip.
Last week, Sunnyside students headed to Ottawa with their teachers Ms. Mosher, Ms. Grey and Ms. Collette for a two-day tour of our national capital. “I do a special unit on Ottawa with the students before we head out,” explained Ms. Collette before she listed all the places the students visited. “On the first day they visited the Museum of Science and Technology, the Aviation Museum, Parliament Hill, the Bytown locks, and they finished with a visit to the IMAX to see Titans of the Ice Age. On the second day, we went to the Nature Museum and the Altitude Gym. The kids really loved that.”
A few of the students who visited Ottawa sat down with the Stanstead Journal on the last day of school to talk about their trip. “The only thing I didn’t like was forgetting my hat and sweater at the College where we stayed. But what I liked most was the Science Museum, especially the big room with all the lights, and the telescope,” said Sieanna Waller.
“I liked all of it pretty much; I’d go back for another visit. What I liked most was the boat ride on the Rideau Canal. It was really cool to see everything on the shore,” commented Noah Wallace as he took a break from the Tombola games. “I saw lots of interesting things at the Nature and Fossil Museum and I liked the College that we stayed at,” said Kassandra Rodrigue.
“When we went to the Science and Technology Museum, what was that ball thing that made our hair stand up? And I really liked the path of lights,” said Joey Alvarez enthusiastically. “We did rock climbing at a special gym and I climbed right up to the ceiling. It was scary at first, but I’d do it again,” said Kayla Alex with a little pride.
Although most of the students had never been to Ottawa before, Katrina Boudreau was visiting for the fourth time, but still really enjoyed it. “I’ve been there before with my family but I was happy to go again. I’ve gone to museums with my family but the rock climbing, I didn’t do that with my family. And it was really fun to stay at the college.”
Last week’s trip was the third big end-of-year trip for Sunnyside teacher Tammy Mosher. “The best part for me is being able to take
