Olympian to join Stanstead Col­lege hockey pro­gram

Stanstead Col­lege is pleased to an­nounce that two-time Olympic gold medal­ist Sarah Vail­lan­court will be join­ing the hockey coach­ing staff at Stanstead Col­lege in 2013-14.

A na­tive of Sher­brooke, Que., Ms. Vail­lan­court will serve as as­sis­tant coach of the Stanstead Col­lege Girls Hockey Spar­tans and pro­vide her ex­per­tise to the hockey pro­gram in gen­eral. In ad­di­tion, she will pro­vide aca­demic sup­port and per­form res­i­den­tial du­ties at the pri­vate board­ing and day school.

Ms. Vail­lan­court’s in­volve­ment will be­gin this sum­mer when she joins the coach­ing staff of the Stanstead Se­lect Girls Hockey Camp and Tour­na­ment, tak­ing place at Stanstead Col­lege Au­gust 4 to 11.

Sarah Vail­lan­court was a mem­ber of the Cana­dian women’s national team, with whom she won gold medals at the 2006 Olympics in Torino and 2010 Olympics in Van­cou­ver. A grad­u­ate of psy­chol­ogy at Har­vard Univer­sity, she was named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2008 and ECAC Hockey Player of the Year in 2009. In 2011, she was named MVP at the Clark­son Cup as a mem­ber of the Mon­treal Stars. She re­tired from the national team this past April.

Ms. Vail­lan­court is no stranger to the board­ing school life, hav­ing com­pleted a Grade 12 year at Pom­fret School in Con­necti­cut where she per­fected her English and hockey skills and earned a spot on the Cana­dian women’s national team at age 18.

“We are un­be­liev­ably thrilled to have Sarah join Stanstead’s hockey pro­gram,” said James Rioux, Co­or­di­na­tor of Hockey Op­er­a­tions. “She is an icon in Cana­dian sport and a tremen­dous role model for young fe­male ath­letes. Our girls hockey pro­gram con­tin­ues to ma­ture along with women’s hockey in Canada and in­ter­na­tion­ally, and this new ad­di­tion to our team will cer­tainly help us con­tinue to grow. We’re look­ing for­ward to ben­e­fit­ing from Sarah’s ex­pe­ri­ence as both a player and a men­tor.”

The Stanstead Col­lege Girls Hockey Spar­tans are ac­tively re­cruited schol­arath­letes who play a full sched­ule dur­ing the school’s win­ter term, in­clud­ing a solid core of games against New Eng­land, Mid­west and Cana­dian prep schools. The team is a mem­ber of the North Amer­i­can Prep Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion.

Stanstead Col­lege was founded in 1872. It is an in­ter­na­tional co-ed­u­ca­tional board­ing/day school from Grades 7-12 in Que­bec’s Eastern Town­ships. Cur­rent en­roll­ment is 203 stu­dents.
