Olympian to join Stanstead College hockey program
Stanstead College is pleased to announce that two-time Olympic gold medalist Sarah Vaillancourt will be joining the hockey coaching staff at Stanstead College in 2013-14.
A native of Sherbrooke, Que., Ms. Vaillancourt will serve as assistant coach of the Stanstead College Girls Hockey Spartans and provide her expertise to the hockey program in general. In addition, she will provide academic support and perform residential duties at the private boarding and day school.
Ms. Vaillancourt’s involvement will begin this summer when she joins the coaching staff of the Stanstead Select Girls Hockey Camp and Tournament, taking place at Stanstead College August 4 to 11.
Sarah Vaillancourt was a member of the Canadian women’s national team, with whom she won gold medals at the 2006 Olympics in Torino and 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. A graduate of psychology at Harvard University, she was named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2008 and ECAC Hockey Player of the Year in 2009. In 2011, she was named MVP at the Clarkson Cup as a member of the Montreal Stars. She retired from the national team this past April.
Ms. Vaillancourt is no stranger to the boarding school life, having completed a Grade 12 year at Pomfret School in Connecticut where she perfected her English and hockey skills and earned a spot on the Canadian women’s national team at age 18.
“We are unbelievably thrilled to have Sarah join Stanstead’s hockey program,” said James Rioux, Coordinator of Hockey Operations. “She is an icon in Canadian sport and a tremendous role model for young female athletes. Our girls hockey program continues to mature along with women’s hockey in Canada and internationally, and this new addition to our team will certainly help us continue to grow. We’re looking forward to benefiting from Sarah’s experience as both a player and a mentor.”
The Stanstead College Girls Hockey Spartans are actively recruited scholarathletes who play a full schedule during the school’s winter term, including a solid core of games against New England, Midwest and Canadian prep schools. The team is a member of the North American Prep Hockey Association.
Stanstead College was founded in 1872. It is an international co-educational boarding/day school from Grades 7-12 in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Current enrollment is 203 students.
