Memphremagog Conservation Inc
Memphremagog Conservation inc (MCI) held its 46th annual general meeting in Austin on July 6, 2013. McGill University emeritus professor and Limnologist Dr. Jacob Kalff gave a conference on his 25 years of experience as a researcher on Lake Memphremagog. Dr. Kalff was also awarded the Gordon Kohl Commemorative Prize, which is awarded by MCI to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution, through his or her personal involvement and dedication, to environmental protection for the benefit of current and future generations.
A number of reports were also presented at the meeting: President’s report, Patrollers’ report, Membership report, as well as the tabling of MCI’s financial statements.
Mrs. Gisèle Lacasse Benoit, Volunteer President, stated: “The conservation of natural landscapes within Lake Memphremagog’s watershed remains a priority for the organization. This conservation program highlights the fundamental functions of ecosystems for the environment, the constant development pressures on natural landscapes, and their impacts on our well-being. MCI’s approach is through the voluntary participation of property owners, as well as Municipalities and the MRC. To this end, for the period of 2013–2014, MCI is aiming to protect, in collaboration with private property owners, 100 hectares of natural landscapes. MCI will also continue to promote the voluntary conservation of private property, and continue its work in partnership with the municipalities, as well as seek additional sources of funding for the program. MCI invites all interested property owners to contact us for more details.”
MCI’s lake patrol invites residents to inform them of any observations of note, such as cyanobacteria blooms, swimmer’s itch, or any other items regarding the environment. They can be reached at 819-620-3939 or patrol@memphrema
The organization is in very good financial health, and has seen its membership grow as a result of a recruitment campaign chaired by Mr. Yves Fortier. To find out more about MCI, visit us on the web at www.memphremagog.org
