Tragedy in Lac-mégantic
Elected representatives adopt a resolution in the matter of railway transportation management
In response to the railway accident that occurred in Lac-Mégantic this past July 6, members of the Municipal Council of the City of Magog adopted a resolution with regard to railway transportation management during a special meeting held on July 8. This resolution will be confirmed during the public meeting scheduled for August 19.
By adopting this resolution, the City of Magog is taking preventive action and is asking public authorities responsible for ensuring that businesses operating in the field of railway transportation, notably Montreal, Maine & Atlantic (MMA), to forward their preventative measures to the City. “We are shaken by the tragedy that the community of Lac-Mégantic is currently going through and wish to take every possible measure to influence political decision-makers and prevent such a catastrophe from ever happening again. The adoption of this resolution is only a first step in this direction,” stated Mrs. Vicki May Hamm, Mayor of the City of Magog. “We request that we be sent the operation and maintenance plans for the railway system, and that these be followed to the letter in order that the transportation of hazardous products, such as crude oil, is carried out safely and with an appropriate emergency measures plan that should be subject to frequent updates. We also request that such plans be filed with our local Municipal Civil Safety Organization so that we are able to intervene and take timely and concerted action.”
Downtown Magog, like in many other cities in Québec, is also traversed by a railway line belonging to MMA. The Municipal Council of Magog hopes that the adoption of this resolution is acknowledged by the authorities and that municipalities.
