Michael Gold­bloom reap­pointed to a sec­ond term as Prin­ci­pal and Vice-chan­cel­lor of Bishop’s Univer­sity

Dr.Robert Gor­don, ’60, D.C.L. 2004, Chair of the Board of Gov­er­nors, is pleased to an­nounce that Prin­ci­pal and Vice- Chan­cel­lor Michael Gold­bloom has been ap­pointed to a sec­ond five-year term as Prin­ci­pal and Vice-Chan­cel­lor of Bishop’s Univer­sity as of July 1, 2013.

Ex­press­ing the unan­i­mous ap­pre­ci­a­tion of the Board of Gov­er­nors, Dr. Gor­don said: “We are ex­tremely pleased that Prin­ci­pal Gold­bloom has agreed to serve for a sec­ond term. He has an out­stand­ing record of achieve­ment dur­ing his first term, in­clud­ing a 40% in­crease in full- time en­rol­ment, a re­newal of the pro­fes­so­ri­ate, an im­proved labour re­la­tions cli­mate, the re­form of gov­er­nance struc­tures, sig­nif­i­cant im­prove­ment in the fi­nan­cial po­si­tion of the Univer­sity, ma­jor in­fra­struc­ture in­vest­ments and the im­ple­men­ta­tion of the U4 League, an in­no­va­tive col­lab­o­ra­tion with three other Cana­dian, pri- mar­ily un­der­grad­u­ate, uni­ver­si­ties. We look for­ward to con­tin­u­ing strong lead­er­ship dur­ing Prin­ci­pal Gold­bloom’s sec­ond man­date”.

In ac­cept­ing this ap­point­ment, Me Gold­bloom com­mented: “Bishop’s Univer­sity pro­vides a first-rate lib­eral ed­u­ca­tion to young peo­ple from Que­bec, Canada and around the world. I am pleased to con­tinue to work with all mem­bers of our Univer­sity com­mu­nity to en­hance fur­ther the qual­ity of the ed­u­ca­tional ex­pe­ri­ence for our stu­dents”.

Prior to join­ing Bishop’s Univer­sity in 2008, Michael Gold­bloom had served as Pub­lisher of the Toronto Star and of The Gazette in Mon­treal, as Chief Ex­ec­u­tive Of­fi­cer of the YMCA de Mon­treal and as Vice-Prin­ci­pal Pub­lic Af­fairs of McGill Univer­sity. He be­gan his ca­reer in pri­vate prac­tice at the Martineau Walker law firm in Mon­treal.

He holds a Bach­e­lor of Arts from Har­vard Univer­sity, as well as a Bach­e­lor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) and a Bach­e­lor of Laws (LL.B.) from McGill Univer­sity. Prin­ci­pal Gold­bloom’s ex­ten­sive record of com­mu­nity lead­er­ship in­cludes ser­vice on the Boards of the Univer­sité Sher­brooke, the Cen­tre hos­pi­tal­ier uni­ver­si­taire de Sher­brooke (CHUS), the Bat­shaw Youth and Fam­ily Cen­tres and the McGill In­sti­tute for the Study of Canada. He has served as Pres­i­dent of Al­liance Que­bec and as Chair­man of the Boards of the VilleMarie So­cial Ser­vices Cen­tre, of Sel­wyn House School and of the Fon­da­tion des YMCA du Québec.
