Free bird garden tours

Stanstead Journal - - FRONT PAGE - Victoria Vanier, Magog

France and André Dion, the authors of roughly twenty bird books, have transformed their small property in Magog, over the last fifteen years, into a sanctuary for both birds and people, planted with over one hundred species of trees and shrubs, those most appreciated and needed by our fine feathered friends.

A tour around the garden with André, France or Carole Lavoie, another Magog resident who has volunteered countless hours working with the Dions in their beautiful and inspiring garden, is a great way to learn why, what, how and when to plant the hundreds of nourishing and attractive plants that birds love.

“The chickadees will use pieces of lavender to line their nests, to keep away fleas and ticks,” said Mr. Dion as he showed me a healthy plant in the front yard that I thought had been planted just for ‘show’. “We have had over one hundred visitors come through the garden this summer,” said Mrs. Dion. “It’s just amazing what two people have done on a small piece of rented property, in just fifteen years!” added Ms. Lavoie.

Free tours of the Dions’ garden, in either English or French, will take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, at 1:00 pm, until September 30th. To take the tour, first call France or André at 819 868-9094 to make an appointment. They live at 19 du Domaine, house no. 25, in Magog.
