Songsters come out for Lac-Megantic

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS -

Dany Flanders will be singing his heart out for the victims of the Lac-Megantic train disaster tonight, along with popular French language performers Rick Hughes, Amylie, Hugo Lapointe (Eric Lapointe’s brother), and Andreanne A. Malette. Radio host Yves Paquette will animate the fundraiser which is taking place at the Vieux Clocher de Magog, beginning at 8:00 pm.

The Quebec environment department has just released a preliminary report on the disaster that includes some shocking figures. 5.6 million litres of crude oil spilled at the time of the accident, much of it burning in the ensuing fire and explosion. Several hundred thousand litres spilled into the soil and the town’s sewer system which must be completely replaced. More than 100,000 litres of oil spilled into the Chaudiere River and into Lake Megantic. About 31 hectares of land has been contaminated and oil was carried 120 kilometres down the Chaudiere River.
