Another school year has begun for Alexander Galt Regional High School and along with it, another sports season. Galt`s athletes donned their new NIKE uniforms as they entered the fields for their first games of the season last week thanks to a generous grant from the Tillotson Foundation and the Piper Classic Golf Tournament. Several spectators also witnessed a successful revival of the Bantam Football program after a three-year absence.

Soccer Roundup:

The Bantam girls soccer team had a great start to the season, with an 8-0 win over the Richmond Raiders. Mariane Noel scored 4 goals, Adrianna Whalen scored 2 goals and Léanne Marmonnier and Caroline Fisette each scored once.

The Junior Girls soccer team started their season with a whopping 11-0 win over the BCS Bears. The Pipers scored early and often in this contest as forward Sarah Landry scored 4 goals while Shannon Brouillette netted a hat-trick. Megan Paxton hit the score sheet twice while Kelsey Burnham and Megan Buzzell rounded out the scoring for the Lady Pipers.

The Senior Girls soccer team had just as successful a start to their by winning 3 out of 4 of their games at the Stanstead Invitational Soccer Tournament. The girls from Galt shut out Sacred Heart from Montreal in game one with a 1-0 win as striker Hannah Hornibrook potted the game-winning goal. The girls from Galt were shut out in game two by the Spartans from Stanstead College and lost 2-0. The Lady Pipers started Game 3 with more energy and it paid huge dividends as they shut out BCS 3-0. Haley Pinkston got the girls going early and Eliza Stevens and Myriam Elkas added insurance to secure the victory. Galt ended the tournament in fine style as they downed The Study from Montreal 4-0. Veteran striker Cortney Burnham scored two goals early while captain Lindsay Moore scored a beautiful goal of her own and Hornibrook scored her second goal of the tournament to round out the scoring. Alexe Bibeau was credited with three tremendous shut outs for the entire tournament.

The Senior Boys started off their season with a very intense 3-3 tie against Massey Vanier. The Bantam Boys Football team got back onto the field Sunday morning for the first time in three years and they made their school proud by winning a very entertaining football game 34-24 over La Poudriere from Drummondville. Running back Jarod Stone was a force to reckon with on the field the entire game as he scored 3 touchdowns to lift the team to victory. Michael Villeneuve scored his first touchdown as a Piper to complete the scoring for the Pipers. Hopefully this is a sign that the team is a force to be reckoned with.

Polyvalente Belanger from St. Martin, Quebec ruined the home opener for the Senior Boys Football team by defeating them 20-13. Fullback Sean Giddings scored one touchdown on a 7 yard run and tailback Loic Desfosses converted on a 12 yard pass from quarterback Chad Buck to give the Pipers a 13-7 lead at the half. However Defosses sustained bad knee injury at the end of the second quarter and was forced to leave the game as well as the rest of the season. With Defosses out of the line up the Pipers lost a lot of speed and it showed in the second half as the team from St. Martin scored two majors to seal the victory.
