Police News – new fraud scheme in region

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEFS - Victoria Vanier

Anew type of fraud has been occurring in the Magog area recently. An English-speaking male has been telephoning people, identifying himself as a Microsoft employee, and telling them that their computer has a virus. He then explains what they have to do to remove the virus, taking control of the computer and stealing all the files that contain important personal information (birthdates, social insurance numbers, etc.). This stolen information is then used to apply for credit cards in the name of the person who had their information stolen. Anyone who has been contacted by this fake Microsoft employee should contact their local police department as soon as possible so they may block any fraudulent transactions.

Also on the territory of the Regie de Police Memphremagog (RPM), on Monday morning, a 22 year-old forced his way into the residence of his former girlfriend and began assaulting her. She was able to call 911 and he then fled. The suspect was located in Sherbrooke, however, he was arrested

when he returned to the Magog area. He will face charges of breaking and entering, assault, illegal confinement, making threats, harassment and breaking probation.

The Service de police de

Sherbrooke held special operations, at the beginning of the school year, around the schools on its territory to improve the safety of the students. Between August 26th and September 18th, out of 386 surveillance operations, 340 tickets were given out. 105 of those tickets were given in 30 km/hr zones.

Police in the Haut St-Francois MRC have been busy eradicating pot plantations. On September 18th, 345 plants were found on a property in Bury and 305 were found in Weedon. September 19th saw the police eradicate 150 more plants in Weedon. They also searched an interior space and found about sixty cuttings and 400 grams of bulk marijuana.
