Two new exhibitions at Valcourt

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM - Valcourt

Starting on September 29, the Centre culturel Yvonne L. Bombardier will present two new exhibitions at Valcourt.

Entendre la couleur, by Catherine Young Bates, and Histoires en lumière, by Sophie Klesen and Denyse Francoeur, are featured until December 15.

Entendre la couleur : To celebrate the arrival of Fall, blasts of images and colours will blow over the high plains of Valcourt. The Centre culturel Yvonne L. Bombardier has seized this autumnal exuberance in presenting recent works of Catherine Young Bates, a figurative artist and renowned landscape painter.

This will be Catherine Young Bates’ first impor-

tant solo exhibition in the Eastern Townships, her adopted region which provides a renewed source of inspiration. While they belong well beyond precise topographical descriptions, Bates’ landscapes reveal intangible elements, such as wind, breath, movement, in short, space and place are captured in her paintings in a bold formal and technical approach.

Catherine Young Bates’ long career as professor in visual arts, poet, art critic and prolific painter, has earned her a welldeserved membership in the Royal Canadian Academy (RCA). Her recent works, many or which have never been exhibited before, will be a wonderful discovery for visitors of the Centre culturel Yvonne L. Bombardier.

Sophie Klesen and Denyse Francoeur practice the ancestral art of Enluminure, an ancient technique presented for the first time at the Centre culturel. This form of art was born with the arrival of the Codex, the ancestor of the modern book that replaced the parchment roll. The first calligraphers of the Christian era adorned the Codex with gilding, images, intricate letters and other decorations. These manuscripts were the first works of art, and as such, they presided to the creation of the illuminator’s craftsmanship, a term taken from the Latin verb illuminare ( to illuminate ).
