The Haskell Free Library Inc. is an American 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that serves the communities of the
Vermont Quebec border area. The pride of Stanstead, Quebec, and Derby Line, Vermont, the Haskell Free Library & Opera House was constructed deliberately astride the boundary line separating Canada from the United States. Area residents rely on the library to access a broad range of services, materials and programs. New services and technologies are being added to support the lifelong learning experiences of local residents. Classified a historic site by the governments of Canada, the United States, and the Province of Quebec, this remarkable institution attracts visitors from around the world. In the opera house, most of the audience sits in the U.S. to watch a show on a stage in Canada. The entrance to this unusual library is in the U.S., the circulation desk and all of the books are in Canada, and the reading room is international.
The expenses related to operating this free public service and to maintaining the unique heritage building are significant. Most of the Library’s operating funds come from investment earnings. Individual donations and fundraising projects are needed to supplement that income and to replenish the endowment for a sustainable future.
