Stanstead College takes solar step to sustainability
Headmaster Michael Wolfe is pleased to announce that the Eric T. Webster Student Centre at Stanstead College will now be powered by solar energy. The most recent achievement of the Stanstead College Environmental Committee, a new 5kW roof-mounted solar panel array, was installed the Student Centre in August and was unveiled Saturday, September 28, 2013.
In 2007 Stanstead College announced a Declaration of Environmental Principles. It resulted in the creation of an Environmental Committee that in turn developed a Green Manifesto, which targets that, “Stanstead College in its functioning will, at a minimum, have no net impact on the Earth or any of the future generations of the Earth.”
The College has embarked on several ini- tiatives towards this end,
including a new heating system with a compact gas condensing boiler capable of achieving ultra-high efficiency levels of 96%, zoned heating and an electric-powered ice resurfacer for the Pat Burns Arena. The Environmental Committee, however, wanted to further raise the visibility of its efforts and pursue a project that could be integrated into the educational curriculum. It explored several projects and settled on “going solar.”
The 5kW Solar System can generate 10,000 kWh per year, enough electricity to power up to 50%
