Christian Vachon honoured with National Assembly Medal
Before friends, representatives from the field of Education and fellow runners who united at Sainte Marguerite school, in Magog, Orford MNA Pierre Reid presented the National Assembly Medal to Christian Vachon. The medal was given to Mr. Vachon, who founded the Fondation Christian Vachon to raise money for children’s sports activities and the Relais
de lac Memphremagog, to highlight his exemplary contribution in favour of school perseverance and the success of all youth, regardless of the financial situation of their parents.
“Christian Vachon is a para-medic and an accomplished athlete who had a difficult time in school. He conceived and realized the Relais de lac
Memphremagog in 2007, the only six person relay race in Canada and the United States. Each relay team must contribute financially to support the children godfathered by the
Fondation Christian Vachon,” explained Mr. Reid. “Last September 28th, not less than 200 teams reuniting 1,150 runners from all over Quebec did the tour of the lake. During this time, 1,200 students from elementary schools ran a cross country event aimed at positioning the sport as a tool for school perseverance. The event raised $218,000. With this sum, the
Fondation Christian Vachon will godfather 650 students in need, in forty-nine schools from the Des Sommets, Hauts-Cantons and Eastern Townships School Boards. This medal from the National Assembly recognizes everything he has done and continues to do for our youth.”
“Sainte Marguerite school is a symbolic place for me in that it was here where I went to school. I remember that those years were very difficult academically and that I had to work very hard to succeed,” commented Christian Vachon. “After my years in elementary school I discovered running. That’s when I told myself that other students may be encountering difficulties in school and I started the Foundation to help them. It is an honour to receive this medal and I’m even prouder to receive it surrounded by young students, my friends and the personnel of Sainte Marguerite school.” Since the creation of the Fondation Christian
Vachon in 2007, not less than $500,000 has been raised and used to help students in the region
