SunnysideElementary will be hosting a pancake breakfast this Sunday, November 10th, from 9:00 am to noon. All proceeds from the breakfast will be put towards the new playground project: “Sunnyside Up!” Pancakes, sausages, bacon, tea, coffee and fresh fruit salad will be served. The cost is $8.00 and children under four eat for free. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

After several years of hoping and dreaming for a new playground for Sunnyside Elementary, a committee has come up with a plan for a ‘new age’, natural playground that would make the most of the school’s spacious grounds. The project, called “Sunnyside UP!”, will convert much of the schoolyard into landscaped play areas that mimic the natural environment using trees, bushes, rocks and sand, etc., but will also keep the small soccer field, baseball diamond and vegetable garden.

The pancake breakfast is part of the fundraising campaign for the over $100,000 project. Besides events like these, the fundraising committee will look for money from the community, local foundations and all levels of government. Project planners will also be on the lookout for donations of materials, topsoil and the use of a truck.

The project’s committee is planning to carry out small improvements during the school year, such as adding picnic tables, basketball hoops and chalkboards to the area, with the major landscaping and construction work being carried out in the summer of 2014.
