The young are taking over

Stanstead Journal - - FORUM -

Itwas a pleasure to see André-Jean Bédard elected in Stanstead. While not the youngest councillor elected in the Townships, the honor goes to 18 year-old Meagan Reid in East Angus, it is time that politics is once again viewed as an honest calling.

But the real surprise came in Daveluyville, where a 23 year-old former semi-pro goaltender, Antoine Tardif, became the mayor.

A political system should reflect the society that it is supposed to represent. Under 35 candidates are too uncommon and under 25 even more. Yet this newspaper believes that they must be present at all political levels. It is the best guarantee that the efforts of men of the same age, who died for democracy, were not in vain. If you are old enough to die for your country, you are old enough to be leaders in it.
