Galt students receive awards
November 15th was a night of celebration and achievement as students, parents and staff gathered in the Alexander Galt auditorium to acknowledge their student’s academic achievements this past school year. Twelve different school and board scholarship, bursaries and gifts were given out to several students for their outstanding academic achievement. Many community bursaries, such as Bishop’s University and Champlain College were also handed out to many students for their excellence in the classroom.
Many awards were handed out on this night, but the one that held the highest honour was The Governor General’s Academic Medal presented to Marilyne Trepanier for the highest combined academic standing in level four and five. Trepanier also received several other awards, such as The French Enrichment award, English Enrichment award, CWL History award, Physics and Chemistry awards, Tom Laming Award, Margaret Paulette Medal, Heather Fisher Memorial Trophy and The Everett “Doc” Porter Award. Trepanier was not the only one who had the honour to receive a multitude of awards.
Patricia Gamache received the awards for Science Enrichment and Math Science Option, as well as Jamie Coles Memorial Citizenship Award and Margaret Paulette Medal and was the runner-up for the Everett “Doc” Porter Award. Alexander Galt’s former president Gregory McBean also returned for awards night to receive The President’s Award as well as The Bob Halsall Student Activities Awards and the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal. Darren Byrns, another former returning student was awarded The Norton-St. Laurent Medal.
Many other students achieved academic excellence in other categories such as Amelie Provencher for receiving the trophy for Top Academic Student for level 1. She also won a silver medal and a prize for the 2013 Expo Science Hydro Quebec Regional Science Fair. Samuel Wubbolts for Top Academic Student for level 2.
Lydia Toussaint and Justine Provencher for Top Academic Student for level 3. Toussaint also won a Social Studies award for EH level 3 and Provencher won a level 3 Math and Science award and finally Anna Davidson for Top Academic Student in level 4 as well as an award for Level 4 Environmental Science.
The evening concluded with a special to Chrissy Guillette, a former Galt employee who lost her battle with cancer this past school year. A scholarship was given out in her honour to Kyle Cork.
A special thank you to the academic awards committee from Galt of Stephanie Brown, Guillaine Boucher and Margaret Young for organizing an evening that many students and parents will cherish forever. The scholarship committee of Linda Gilbert, Marie Thibault and Bob Halsall must be applauded for ensuring so many bursaries and scholarships were handed out.
