New locale for Stanstead Christmas Market
TheStanstead Christmas Market is back again this year, this time taking place in a newly renovated, downtown location. The new owner of the former Del Monty Hotel building, Marcel Hauben has graciously offered up that space so over twenty local artisans can set up shop for the Market which will be on December 7th, naturally the same day as Stanstead’s downtown Christmas Celebration.
“The Christmas Market will actually be in two places. Most of the artisans will be in the new Place Del Monty, and we’ll have a few more across the street in the Gallery,” explained Beverly Goodsell, one of the organizers of the Christmas Market. For the big event on December 7th, the art gallery at the corner of Dufferin and Notre Dame is being transformed into what has been nicknamed the “Moose Café”. On that day only, there will be tables and chairs set up for people who want to sit or come in from the cold. Sweet and savory treats, tea and coffee will be available, along with live piano playing with Lise Flanders, from noon to 1:00, and with students of Stanstead College from 1:00 to 3:00. “People who want to take a break from shopping or the activities outside can come in, sit and have snacks, and still see what’s going on out in the square,” said Mrs. Goodsell. So if you get hungry, tired or cold at the Market, just look for the big moose!
Over at Place Del Monty, shoppers will find something for everyone on their list. A few of the handmade items include fir wreaths, birdhouses, soaps, bath salts and lip balms, candles, baskets, knit goods, stained glass and jewelry. To tempt the palate there will be maple products, bison products, fudge, baked goods, jams and jellies. While moms and pops shop, the kids can get their picture taken with Santa, for only $2, or have hot chocolate and get their faces painted for free.
Live music is always part of an old-fashioned market and, this year, Mike Goudreau will provide that music, performing in Place Del Monty at 3:00. The Christmas Market will run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
