The Minister slams the door on Sherbrooke airport
The Conservative government couldn’t care less about the economic development of the Eastern Townships, denounced New Democrat MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault (Sherbrooke), as the Transport Minister slammed the door on new accreditation for the airport.
The minister was responding to a question from the MP for Sherbrooke. “The mayors of my region have had enough of the Minister’s lack of progress on this issue,” explained Dusseault. “It’s a measure that would help our region’s economic development by generating tens of millions of dollars in economic benefits. Why does she want to abandon Sherbrooke and put the brakes on its economic development?”
Unfortunately, the minister completely slammed the door shut on this proposition. “We will not be adding anymore airports to the list,” she said categorically, all the while specifying that 20 other airports had submitted the same request as Sherbrooke.
The New Democrat MP believes that the fight must now be brought right to the department’s doorstep to provide the airport with the proper organization in order to pursue its development.
“We need to work with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Transport Canada to obtain an exemption. I will certainly continue to put pressure on the minister, because it’s completely unacceptable to outright dismiss the ambitions of a whole region,” said Dusseault.
