Lo­cal stu­dents win awards

Two lo­cal stu­dents were names ju­nior male and fe­male ath­letes of the year at Stanstead Col­lege’s Bac­calau­re­ate and Prize-Giv­ing Ser­vice this past Satur­day at Cen­te­nary United Church.

Kayla Ouel­let of Stanstead was the re­cip­i­ent of Sheila Fer­gu­son Shield as the ju­nior girl ath­lete of the year. The Grade 9 stu­dent was a mem­ber of the ju­nior soc­cer, bas­ket­ball and rugby teams and won Ju­nior S awards for soc­cer and rugby. Kayla also won the Eric T. Web­ster Award, pre­sented to a de­serv­ing re­turn­ing stu­dent.

Fi­nally, Kayla’s many con­tri­bu­tions to school life earned her the Wilder Shield, pre­sented to the ju­nior stu­dent with the most pos­i­tive in­flu­ence. This is con­sid­ered the top prize in the ju­nior school.

Will Huck­ins of Og­den won the S.F. Ab­bott Me­mo­rial Shield as the ju­nior ath­lete of the year. The Grade 8 stu­dent won let­ter awards for each of the three sports he par­tic­i­pated in this year: ban­tam soc­cer, ban­tam hockey and ju­nior rugby.

Other lo­cal win­ners in­cluded Mackenzy St-Pierre, Grade 7, of Og­den, who won the Kenneth Reed Me­mo­rial Award pre­sented to a lo­cal ju­nior stu­dent re­turn­ing to the school; and Abby Mur­ray, Grade 7, of Stanstead, who won the Thes­pian Shield for Act­ing.
