Tourisme Cantons-del’Est (TCE) deplores the new project in Potton Township to modify zonage regulations in order to hold a motorized sporting competition on its territory. TCE, whose mandate is to promote tourism in the region, has been highlighting ‘nature’, the beauty of the landscape, agrotourism and open air activities to attract visitors for the last twenty years. In 2012 alone, the Eastern Townships welcomed almost nine million visitors.

The presence of motorized vehicles in the area beside the Montagnes Vertes nature reserve is a contradiction of the ‘Art of Clean living’ in the region. “This type of event that has motorized vehicles competing right beside a protected, natural area goes against the development orientations of Tourisme Cantonsde- l’Est,” commented Alain Laroche, the general director of ATR.

The development plan of the TCE focuses on the beauty of nature and the charm of picturesque villages; agro-tourism and gourmet tourism; discovery tourism; meetings, conventions and sporting events.

Tourisme Cantons-del’Est hopes that the municipal council of Potton Township will keep in mind the regional orientations towards environmentally responsible tourism.
