Wheelchair racer Diane Roy, of Hatley, won the silver medal in the 1500 metre race at the Commonwealth Games that finished up in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday. Ms. Roy was leading for most of the race but was caught by Australian Angela Ballard just before the end. Under a driving rain, Ms. Roy recorded a time of 3 min. 59.55 sec. while Ms. Ballard’s time was 3 min. 59.20 sec.

“I’m happy with my race, I did what I had to do,” said Ms. Roy. “Since it was raining, I placed myself in front for the whole race, at my own speed, and I knew no one was in front of me or trying to overtake me, until the last lap. I was a little upset; I wanted to finish first because that was my objective. But the rain can play tricks on you. The racing technique is different and there is the risk of sliding. It is more physically demanding.”
