One case of Legionnaire’s at CHUS
Last Thursday, it was announced by the administrators of the CHUS (Fleurimont) that a patient in the oncology unit had contracted Legionnaire’s Disease and had received an official diagnosis on August 7th. On August 12th, joint investigations made by the CHUS and the Direction de santé publique (DSP) indicated that Legionella pneumophilia was present in the bathroom of the patient’s hospital room. The patient was then transferred to another room and put in isolation.
As of last Thursday, only the one case of the disease had been confirmed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the source of contamination might have been the water network that feeds wing 5 of the CHUS. The rest of the Fleurimont hospital and the Hotel Dieu CHUS were not affected. As a prevention measure, access to the water in sinks and showers in the oncology ward was cut off. Bottled water, moist towelettes and hand sanitizer was provided to the patients.
Water samples were taken on each floor of wing 5 last Thursday. The results will be known only within five to ten days later. The disinfection and decontamination process of the water system was done last Thursday and Friday. Besides these measures, the personnel will be more vigilant regarding respiratory problems in patients and all the cases of pneumonia possibly acquired at the CHUS within the last six months will be investigated.
